What is CPR

  • The American Heart Association defines CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) as an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when a person stops breathing or the heart stops beating.
  • CPR is used often alongside artificial ventilation to preserve brain functions until further measures are addressed to restore blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.
  • Within just three minutes of being unresponsive, serious brain damage begins to corrode the victim. Understanding this, it is essential to provide high-quality CPR in a timely manner to achieve the best possibility of survival.
